The City of Albuquerque has launched a new initiative to enhance the city's appearance through daily cleanups. Starting on October 2 and running until October 11, city employees have been encouraged to participate in two-hour cleanup shifts across various neighborhoods. As of October 4, more than 700 staff members, including Mayor Tim Keller and other city officials, have taken part, collecting a total of 10,000 pounds of trash.

"It was a beautiful day to get away from computer screens and onto City streets," said Transit IT Manager Chris Bergs. "I got to experience neighborhoods I normally drive through and some of the beautiful artwork around town while helping the community and networking with City staff.”

Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the dedication of city workers: “City workers live here and care deeply about our community. We will continue to create opportunities like these for city staff to go above and beyond in their roles as we all work to make a tangible difference in Albuquerque.”

This effort addresses concerns raised by the community, especially during events like the Balloon Fiesta when visitor numbers increase. The initiative is part of the city's regular maintenance efforts but also aims to strengthen ties between city employees and residents.

“The goal of this effort is not just to clean up our city but to strengthen the bond between employees and the community they serve,” stated Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Samantha Sengel. “By coming together in this way, we hope to set an example of civic pride for our residents and inspire others to join us in keeping Albuquerque beautiful.”

The administration has ensured that all participating employees are equipped with protective gear. Participation was mandatory for unclassified City staff as well as E and I series employees unless it would negatively impact public safety or facility operations.

The administration expressed gratitude towards all contributors who have participated in this endeavor.
