A Laguna man has been indicted by federal prosecutors for allegedly assaulting his intimate partner. The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez, alleges that on August 18, 2024, Kenzie Alonzo, 25, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, beat and strangled Jane Doe. As a result of the assault, Jane Doe was hospitalized with severe bruising, bite marks on her body, and a concussion.
Alonzo will remain on conditions of release pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case with assistance from the Zia Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jesse Pecoraro is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
