The ABQ BioPark Zoo is gearing up to celebrate Great Ape-ril, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for great apes conservation. Since 2016, the zoo has been hosting Great Ape-ril, which focuses on species such as gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and humans, raising over $45,000 for great ape conservation so far.

"Great Ape-ril is all about helping our guests make connections with great apes," said Josephine Frentzel, assistant curator of primates. "We get to spend every day with these amazing animals, and this event helps us bring you a little closer, too. Together, we can all help these endangered species."

Throughout the month of April, the primate animal care staff at the zoo will offer special opportunities for guests to learn more about great apes. Special Discovery Stations will be set up near the primate habitats on select Saturdays, where guests can have their questions answered, explore biofacts, and learn how to protect these amazing animals. These events are included with regular admission.

For guests looking to make a larger impact on great ape conservation, exclusive tours of the public primate areas will be available. These tours will provide a more intimate experience, allowing guests to interact with primate caregivers and learn more about each species and the unique personalities of the great apes at the ABQ BioPark. Interested individuals can book their tour in advance.

In addition to the on-site events, the zoo will also be hosting fundraising events around the city throughout the month of April. Guests are encouraged to follow the zoo's social media pages for updates on these events and other ways to support great ape conservation.
