ALBUQUERQUE – Last Friday, February 23, Mayor Tim Keller and City leaders from various departments visited Northern New Mexico College to engage with students and share job opportunities with the City of Albuquerque at an on-campus job fair. ABQ RIDE also provided the college with a bus that will be used to start a brand new CDL training program at the school, helping to build a needed workforce of drivers and mechanics. This visit was part of the City’s statewide higher education roadshow, aimed at bolstering the local workforce and spreading the word about careers for young people in Albuquerque.

“By partnering with schools like Northern New Mexico College, Albuquerque is paving the road for students as they enter the workforce after graduation,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. “This bus is a symbol of our promise toward building strong candidates for essential jobs that help keep our City and state moving forward.”

As ABQ RIDE shifts to a lower-emission and electric fleet, older buses are being decommissioned, making them the perfect classroom for emerging mechanics and drivers within NNMC’s future CDL training program. While ABQ RIDE provides CDL training to incoming drivers and mechanics, having the license before applying for a position would shorten the training period and jumpstart their careers.

The City’s higher education job fair series will continue over the course of the next year, reaching universities, community colleges, and technical schools throughout New Mexico to inspire students to build a career here at home.
