Deputy Involved Shooting on April 1st, 2022 Offender Update

Shooting

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office issued the following announcement on April 4.

On April 1, 2022 at approximately 7:00 am, deputies responded to the 200 block of Saavedra SW in reference to a suspicious person. When deputies arrived on scene, they observed a male possibly vandalizing a vehicle in the area. The suspect fled in a separate vehicle and attempted to ram the deputies inside their marked patrol units.

A pursuit ensued and ended in the area of Arenal Rd and Lopez Rd when the offender began shooting at deputies. Deputies returned gunfire and the offender stayed barricaded in the vehicle while refusing to comply with the deputies’ commands.

It is unknown if the offender was injured at that time but deputies observed him moving throughout the vehicle as they continued to attempt to gain his compliance. The BCSO SWAT team was activated and arrived on scene. During the approach of the SWAT team, the offender shot at deputies once again and at least one member of the SWAT team returned fire.

The SWAT team approached the vehicle and located one male deceased inside.

No deputies were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The deceased offender has been identified as Taylor John Crabb (37). He had an extensive criminal history and was a convicted felon. Crabb has been arrested in the past for: driving while intoxicated, child abuse, possession of a controlled substance, trafficking a controlled substance, probation violations, disarming a police officer, multiple counts of battery on a peace officer amongst various other crimes in several counties.

In 2012 Crabb was sentenced to the Department of Corrections for a fourteen-year sentence. At this time, investigators are currently looking into the details surrounding his release.
