BCSO Violent Crime and Homicide Detectives Investigate Homicide in the Southwest Mesa near Route 66 Casino Update

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on March 23.

On Sunday, February 27th, 2022, BCSO deputies responded to a fight in progress in the southwest Mesa near Route 66 Casino. A group of concerned citizens witnessed several subjects in the area drinking alcohol and firing guns. The concerned citizen also observed their behavior escalating, resulting in a physical altercation.

When deputies arrived on scene, Darrin Martinez (39), Devin Martinez (30), and Larry Martinez (63) were identified as involved in the physical altercation. Both Darrin and Devin are Larry's sons. Larry Martinez was unconscious with obvious signs of trauma. Deputies exhausted life-saving measures, and Larry was later pronounced deceased on scene.

Everyone involved had consistent injuries with being in a physical altercation. It was determined that Darrin Martinez was the primary aggressor and sustained injuries pertaining to the altercation.

With assistance from the BCSO Homicide Unit, United States Marshal Services, and Valencia County Sheriff's Office, Darrin was located in Los Lunas. Darrin was arrested on March 22nd, 2022, for second-degree murder and aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm.

Darrin Martinez was booked into Valencia County Jail and awaiting to be extradited to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
