Staffers from the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office will form the nexus of an intelligence division entrusted for consolidating information from federal databases as a way of staying on top of criminal trends.
According to the Associated Press, the division will also be manned by outside intelligence from federal programs. Members of the Dona Ana Department are still working to get the high security clearances needed to have access to the federal databases.
Dona Ana Sheriff Kim Stewart said the two departments already have a working relationship where the sheriff’s office shares pertinent information with federal agencies.
Stewart said databases from agencies with the reach and scope of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security could enhance the department’s ability to net larger busts.
