The Ladera Golf Course, situated on the Westside, has opened its new lighted night driving range. This development marks the first of its kind in the area. The official opening was marked by a ceremony attended by city officials and members of the community, where participants tested the new facility under the new lights.

“It really means something important,” expressed Santana Parras, a young golfer who had the honor of taking the first swing. He added, “It gets really hot during the day and nice at night, so it’s nice to now have these lights.”

The installed energy-efficient LED lights have been specifically designed to reduce impact on the surroundings and the night sky. The initiative comes in response to a consistent rise in play at Ladera, which recorded 87,675 rounds in 2024, improving from 75,179 rounds in 2023.

Mayor Tim Keller highlighted, “This new feature is yet another way we’re breaking through and creating more amenities to take Albuquerque to the next level. The lights add to the attractiveness and atmosphere of Ladera, and the Westside community is excited for more family-friendly evening activities as we move into warmer weather.”

Dave Simon, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, encouraged the benefits, saying, “Extend your practice time in the evening, then hit the perfect shot on the course the next day. At Ladera, we’re shining a light on your swing – literally!”

The range will operate during evening hours throughout the summer, offering players a chance to practice in the cooler temperatures and accommodate different schedules. It will be operational from April through October.

From 2020, the City allocated $1.8 million to enhance Ladera Golf Course. This included projects such as water conservation initiatives, clubhouse patio improvements, establishing a new tee line, and general maintenance. An expansion of the cantina was also opened in late 2024.

New Mexico State Senator Moe Maestas commented, “Quality of life and fun things to do are synonymous. Ladera’s new night time driving range is an awesome addition to our City.”

The project, costing $334,390, was financed through the City's 2023 General Obligation (G.O.) Bond along with a state capital outlay grant that Senator Maestas facilitated.

This facility is the city's third lighted driving range, the others located at Puerto del Sol Golf Course and the Balloon Fiesta Park.
