The University of New Mexico (UNM) is undergoing a review of its policies, particularly those concerning nondiscrimination and Title IX, to ensure compliance with recent federal executive orders and legal requirements.

The university has invited public comment on proposed changes to these policies until April 4. These changes are intended to keep pace with shifts in the higher education landscape while maintaining UNM's core values. The revised policies seek to guarantee equitable and fair employment practices, including opportunities, hiring, promotion, retention, and pay, as required by law.

UNM, as a public institution dependent on federal and state funding, must align its policies with the applicable laws and mandates. The administration emphasized that it "will only respond to specific and actionable federal requirements or actions." Information on the policies under review has been made available through UNM's Updates and Provisional Guidance related to 2025 Federal Executive Actions. The updates are based on careful evaluations of new requirements, supported by legal analysis and advice from industry experts. Despite ongoing legal challenges, the university must adhere to current legal standards. Should court decisions mandate changes, UNM will adjust its policies accordingly.

Following the public comment phase, the proposed policies might be revised. The final drafts will then be presented to senior administrators and require approval from the UNM President.
