Tamarind Institute at The University of New Mexico has announced a new endowed scholarship, the Felsen/Johnson Memorial Scholarship, in collaboration with printer and artist Chris Fox. This initiative aims to support students enrolled in Tamarind’s Printer Training Program.

Chris Fox, motivated by her commitment to give back to the community and honor Bill Johnson and Sidney Felsen, made this scholarship possible. "My hope is that this scholarship will make it possible for more students to attend Tamarind and experience the wonderful art of lithography," said Fox. "I especially want to support those who might not have the opportunity without financial assistance."

The scholarship offers financial aid to one student per academic year, prioritizing those with financial need. It will be available for applications starting in the fall 2025 program.

The Printer Training Program at Tamarind is an intensive two-semester certificate course where students engage full-time from August through May, dedicating between 60-70 hours weekly in the studio.

Diana Gaston, Director of Tamarind Institute, commented on the significance of this scholarship: "This scholarship is particularly meaningful to Tamarind as it was created by a printer, someone from our field of collaborative printmaking who understands firsthand the challenges and sacrifices of the printer's life. This incredible gift will offer support and encouragement for the next generation of printers."

Fox's career was notably influenced by her experiences at Gemini G.E.L., where she worked alongside artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. Both Johnson and Felsen played crucial roles in shaping her professional journey.
