The Mountain West has announced its 2024 Fall Esports Players of the Year, recognizing outstanding achievements in gaming. Among the honorees is Tyler "Fossil" Luis, a senior at the University of New Mexico (UNM), who was named Player of the Year for his performance in Rocket League.

Luis, who studies geology, began his journey into esports during high school. He gained early recognition by being shout casted at the New Mexico Activities Association High School State Esports Finals for Rocket League. His passion for gaming followed him to UNM, where he led the Lobo Rocket League team through an undefeated regular season and earned his recent accolade.

Beyond his personal success, Luis contributed significantly to developing esports in New Mexico. He helped establish the New Mexico Esports Championship Series (NMECS), expanding Rocket League competitions throughout the state. Reflecting on this growth, Luis said, “When I got to UNM, the esports club was barely getting off the ground, and I was invested in seeing it grow.”

UNM faculty members praised Luis for his accomplishments. Duane Arruti, UNM Chief Information Officer, stated: “Congratulations, Tyler, on this incredible recognition for both yourself and UNM Esports. You are a fantastic representative of UNM Esports and UNM.”

The Lobo Rocket League team had a challenging season but managed to secure third place in the Mountain West Conference. Despite limited resources, Luis assembled a competitive team with minimal recruitment efforts.

Looking ahead to future prospects at UNM Esports under new leadership and continued team growth in Rocket League excites Luis. He remarked on winning the award: “To be honest, this award was totally unexpected... To win the award with the UNM Esports badge on my chest really brings my career here full circle.”

Luis’ recognition as Rocket League Player of the Year is celebrated by UNM Esports as it marks another achievement for Lobo esports and highlights New Mexico's burgeoning gaming scene.
