University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes delivered her annual State of the University address, which was broadcast live on the Office of the President’s website and UNM’s YouTube channel. As the first woman to hold this position at UNM, Stokes emphasized themes of unity, innovation, and adaptation to change.
Stokes began by acknowledging the Indigenous Peoples’ Land and Territory, highlighting UNM's commitment to honoring indigenous stewardship. She introduced this year’s theme: “Together…for Tomorrow,” focusing on connection and collaboration within the university community.
Stokes assured that despite changes ahead, UNM would uphold its core values. "Each of us defines all of us" is more than just a catchy phrase; it's a call to action intrinsic to our Lobo identity," she stated.
Discussing UNM's role in New Mexico's growth, Stokes highlighted contributions in education, healthcare, and economic development. She noted that UNM Health Sciences plays a critical role as it trains healthcare professionals and serves as the state’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. Research initiatives include studies on microplastics found in the brain.
UNM plans transformative projects like investing in a new School of Medicine facility with advanced infrastructure for healthcare advancement. “As an institution, we proudly embrace the opportunities and challenges presented by our state—and we’re proud to contribute to the growth, prosperity, and advancement of New Mexico," said Stokes.
Celebrating faculty achievements, Stokes mentioned awards such as Women in STEM Awards with 14 winners across 11 projects and prestigious NEH Grants won by two Arts & Sciences faculty members. The university also received national recognition for research innovation through awards like McKnight Scholar Award and NSF TRAILBLAZER award.
Stokes highlighted public-facing projects like a new arthropod website from the Museum of Southwestern Biology and research testing ski boot bindings for injury prevention. She emphasized pride in being part of New Mexico's community through initiatives like Grand Challenges teams addressing pressing issues since 2018.
The university supports economic growth via programs like UNM Rainforest Innovations which inspire future entrepreneurs. “We want our university to be more dynamic, more inclusive, and more impactful,” she remarked.
Turning to student success stories, Stokes shared accomplishments such as having its first Rhodes Scholar in two decades along with three Goldwater Scholars and a Churchill Scholar. A team from Anderson School of Management won first place at the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship.
Athletic achievements included cross-country teams winning Mountain West titles while men’s basketball secured victory at Mountain West Conference Tournament 2024; an esports player was named Mountain West Player of Year too.
She acknowledged support from donors/alumni who fund scholarships/programs while consuming five-and-a-half tons green chile annually during alumni events! Campus saw service expansion/revitalization including Lobo Welcome Center opening/adobe building renovation under sustainability commitment plus upcoming projects supported by GO Bonds voter approval last year across four branch campuses too!
