Bernalillo County is requesting $1 million to plan, design, and construct additional space for the Second Judicial District Court. This funding will facilitate planning and improvements for new courtrooms, hearing rooms, and related support and office spaces.

The courthouse was originally built to accommodate 21 judges but now houses 34 judicial officers. The current infrastructure is insufficient for the court system's needs. The project aims to address these requirements and prepare for future expansion at the court located at the southwest corner of Fourth Street and Lomas Boulevard.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $2 million. Bernalillo County has already secured $1 million, leaving an additional $1 million as part of its capital outlay priorities.

The Second Judicial District Court is one of 13 district courts in New Mexico, serving all of Bernalillo County. It handles both criminal and civil cases, as well as appeals from lower courts.
