During the coldest months of the year, Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) has successfully transported a record number of individuals experiencing homelessness to shelters. In January alone, 1,205 people were moved to safety through ACS's overnight transport service. This marks an 88% increase from December, highlighting the critical role this service plays during periods of dangerously low temperatures.

The ACS Emergency Overnight Shelter Transportation Service provided refuge for over 2,341 individuals across November, December, and January. Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Getting people indoors and warm can make all the difference in a person’s safety, and it’s also an opportunity to connect them to services that may help them regain stability.” He noted that previously there was no system in place for late-night assistance but now with the Gateway and ACS's efforts, there is a solution.

Operating daily from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. until April 2025, anyone needing shelter can contact ACS at 505-418-6178 for transportation to nearby shelters. Walter Adams, ACS Deputy Director of Field Operations stated: “This month, our overnight team has successfully assisted more individuals than ever, emphasizing how critical this service is during these cold nights.”

In addition to nighttime services, ACS continues daytime outreach efforts to connect individuals with resources before nightfall. They are working closely with local shelters to ensure comprehensive care for those transported.

ACS serves as Albuquerque’s third branch of public safety focusing on behavioral health and other non-criminal issues. Their emergency overnight shelter transportation will remain available through April from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., providing crucial support for those in need during harsh weather conditions.
