The ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque has been recognized as a Certified Autism Center by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This designation highlights the BioPark's efforts to offer inclusive and accessible experiences for all visitors, marking a first for the city.

Mayor Tim Keller stated, "We want our city to be welcoming and inclusive, and the BioPark has gone above and beyond for this designation. This certification is a first for Albuquerque, improving quality of life for all, especially for families with autistic individuals."

To achieve this status, over 80% of the BioPark's guest-facing staff underwent autism-specific training. The training provides staff with skills and resources to create a supportive environment for autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors. An on-site review by IBCCES helped develop sensory guides and offered further recommendations.

Allyson Zahm, ABQ BioPark Guest Experience Manager, expressed that the certification opens doors to families who may have hesitated to visit previously. "It is important that every guest at the ABQ BioPark is welcome to connect with nature in a way that is meaningful to them," Zahm noted.

The BioPark has implemented several measures to ensure an inclusive experience. These include creating an online accessibility page, producing social narratives for preparation, providing on-site sensory information, hosting sensory-friendly events monthly with limited ticket sales, and installing physical signs indicating areas of high sensory experiences.

IBCCES Board Chairman Myron Pincomb praised the achievement: "We are proud to celebrate the ABQ BioPark’s achievement of becoming a Certified Autism Center, recognizing their efforts to best include and accommodate every person that visits."

For over two decades, IBCCES has led cognitive disorder training and certification globally. They provide evidence-based training alongside insights from autistic individuals. The organization also manages AutismTravel.com, listing certified locations meeting Certified Autism Center requirements.
