Steve Segura, a former coal miner from Raton, New Mexico, reflects on his career in the mines and the impact it has had on his health. After joining the York Canyon Mine at 19, following in the footsteps of his father and other family members, Segura worked underground for two decades before transitioning to a different job. Now at 65, he faces the challenges of Black Lung Disease.

Black Lung Disease is a condition caused by inhaling coal dust, leading to severe lung damage over time. "My heart is good," Segura shared, "but if you see the X-rays of my lungs, both are scarred up and black."

Pulmonologist Akshay Sood from The University of New Mexico School of Medicine provides care for miners like Segura. Sood travels monthly to Miners Colfax Medical Center in Raton to treat patients with this disease. He holds the position of Miners Colfax Endowed Chair in Mining-Related Lung Diseases and collaborates with a team that offers outreach services across New Mexico.

Sood highlights that miners often exhibit strong physical abilities early in their careers but experience significant declines as Black Lung Disease progresses. Despite this deterioration, many remain reluctant to acknowledge their symptoms openly.

Segura recalls working under harsh conditions at York Canyon Mine where ventilation was inadequate. “We were down there,” he said about one particularly challenging period. “There was no air... It was scary.”

Miners Colfax Medical Center has partnered with UNM's School of Medicine for over 20 years to provide essential medical support for miners throughout New Mexico and beyond. This partnership includes initiatives like Project ECHO which aims to enhance access to specialized care in underserved areas.

Sood's dedication extends beyond clinical practice; he also serves as assistant dean at UNM’s School of Medicine focusing on mentoring future healthcare professionals committed to serving rural communities.

In recent evaluations conducted by Sood’s team during visits to Raton, several miners showed evidence of Black Lung Disease yet did not qualify for benefits under current regulations—a situation complicated by disputes from coal companies regarding diagnosis validity.

“Black Lung is a classic example,” said Sood about legal challenges faced by affected workers seeking assistance through existing laws designed initially with their welfare in mind.
