High school students are set to engage in coding and artificial intelligence at the upcoming Thunderbird Hackathon. The event, now in its second year, is sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories and Explora's X Studio. Scheduled for Saturday, February 8th, participants will work on creating a machine learning model aimed at predicting crime incidents using data from Albuquerque’s open-data initiative.
“At Thunderbird Hacks, we empower students to use technology to make their community safer,” said Catherine Appleby, a computer scientist at Sandia and co-creator of the hackathon.
Students will receive practical training in Python programming, machine learning concepts, artificial intelligence, and data analysis—skills that are increasingly important in today's job market.
“Engaging students in these discussions enhances their understanding of technology’s real-world applications and encourages them to consider careers in fields that contribute to public safety,” added Deb Menke, STEM outreach program coordinator at Sandia.
The event details are as follows:
- Date: February 8th, 2025
- Time: 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Location: Explora's X Studio, 1701 Mountain Rd. NW, Albuquerque
