University Libraries has introduced the Menstrual Equity Pilot Project to provide free menstrual products to the campus community. This initiative, which began this semester, will offer products in select bathrooms at Zimmerman Library, with daily restocking to ensure availability.

The project is funded by the UNM Student Fee Review Board (SFRB), highlighting the University's dedication to student health and well-being. The focus is on high-traffic bathrooms near lobbies and stairwell landings for convenient access.

“We are committed to supporting the health and well-being of our campus community,” said Amy Jackson, University Libraries associate dean. “The Menstrual Equity Pilot Project is a crucial step toward addressing the often-overlooked burden carried by people who menstruate. Thanks to funding from the Student Fee Review Board, we are able to provide free menstrual products in select restrooms in Zimmerman Library. This initiative reduces barriers to access, alleviates unnecessary stress, and promotes a more equitable and inclusive environment for all students, staff, and visitors.”

Menstrual equity is essential for an inclusive campus environment. Free product access can ease financial burdens and reduce stress for students managing academic and personal responsibilities. The ACLU notes that “nearly one in five American teenagers who live in poverty lack of menstrual products and support can lead to lost educational opportunity.”

The University Libraries team aims for this pilot project to lead to expanded future access. Feedback from the UNM community is encouraged to guide future decisions and improve accessibility.
