U.S. News & World Report has recognized The University of New Mexico Hospital as a "2025 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care." This designation acknowledges the hospital's exceptional efforts in reducing severe newborn complications, promoting birthing-friendly practices, and addressing racial and ethnic disparities in care.
Kate Becker, CEO of UNM Hospital, expressed her gratitude: "We are deeply honored to be known as a 'High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care,' a testament to the exceptional dedication and expertise of our maternal care teams. This recognition reinforces our mission to deliver outstanding health care to the community we proudly serve."
Eve Espey, MD, MPH, former chair of the UNM School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, also commented on the achievement: "We are absolutely thrilled to have this recognition. It's the culmination of a tremendous amount of effort on the part of a very big team—a team that has been mostly led by Brenna McGuire, MD; Trish Mondragon, MSN, RN, RNC; our midwifery leaders and family medicine leaders."
Brenna McGuire emphasized the hospital's commitment to serving all patients: "For our department, the award is recognition of the continued high level of care that we provide... We really strive to provide the best maternity care for all patients."
UNM Hospital’s maternal-fetal medicine group supports high-risk patients from rural areas and Tribal communities. They lead initiatives to expand access for underserved populations through clinics catering to undocumented and self-pay patients.
McGuire added: “Being part of this team... we want people to feel like they are involved in their prenatal care and in their delivery process.”
Lisa Hofler, MD, MPH, MB, interim chair of the UNM School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology stated: “UNM has always delivered compassionate... I’m proud that our quality outcomes continue to improve.”
