Art installations illuminate downtown Albuquerque in new initiative

The City of Albuquerque's Department of Arts & Culture has announced the launch of City Brights II. This initiative is a collaboration with the Public Art Urban Enhancement Division and Albuquerque ArtWalk to bring light-based art installations to Downtown Albuquerque.

Eleven temporary installations by local artists will be featured in businesses and on city properties, offering unique activations downtown. The participating artists include James Black; Chris Casey and Kasra Manavi; Celestino Crowhill; Dason Culver; David Estes and John-Mark Collins; Jordan MacHardy; Aaron Mancha and Secret Gallery; Michael Pino and Dusty Deen; David Santiago; Zuyva Sevilla and Kirsten Angerbauer; Hong Yan.

“This imaginative project will create immersive experiences that connect families and visitors with the heart of our city,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. “It’s a welcomed addition to Albuquerque’s robust art scene, one that will beautify Downtown while showcasing the creativity of local artists.”

The installations feature architectural lighting interventions, lighted sculptures, digital projections, among other forms. These works are designed to provide an interactive experience for both visitors and residents from the sidewalks of downtown. They will be spread throughout the broader downtown core.

City Brights II will debut during the December, January, and February First Friday ArtWalks in Downtown Albuquerque, remaining on display through winter 2025.

Additionally, the November 20, 2024 episode of the Public Art Take Another Look podcast highlights City Brights II. It includes a discussion between teaching artist and downtown business owner James Black, alongside project coordinator and artist Christine Jelson West.
