New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver have officially declared November as National Career Development Month. The proclamation emphasizes the importance of fostering professional growth and prioritizing lifelong career development for the state's residents.
Marty Apodaca, career counseling manager at UNM Career Services and current president of the National Career Development Association (NCDA), was instrumental in writing and submitting the proclamation. His aim is to amplify the mission and honor the contributions of career development professionals across New Mexico, which he pursues through his work at UNM Career Services.
Apodaca highlighted that the commitment of Career Services staff not only strengthens individual professions but also empowers New Mexico residents through meaningful career advancement opportunities. In his role, he guides students on their career development journey by helping them prioritize goals, values, interests, and long-term growth.
“The work we do at Career Services is, at its core, social justice and advocacy,” Apodaca stated. “Ensuring access to fair-paying jobs, worker protections, and fulfilling careers empowers individuals to become the author of their career story.”
UNM Career Services supports students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members in making informed decisions about careers, education, and employment. Their services are tailored to meet individuals wherever they are in their career development process.
“We emphasize the importance of continuous learning, skill development, and expanding knowledge to foster a strong, resilient workforce,” Apodaca said. This dedication strengthens individual professions while empowering New Mexico residents through significant career advancement opportunities.
From when students enter The University of New Mexico (UNM), Career Services provides guidance on exploring careers, selecting majors, aligning academic interests with career goals. Students receive assistance with internships and externships placements as well as skill development throughout their academic journey.
“Our career development professionals are committed to staying informed about evolving workforce trends, economic forecasts, and industry changes,” said Dr. Jenna Crabb, executive director for student resources and acting director for Career Services. “Supporting our students in their career journeys and helping them achieve their goals has always been at the heart of our mission. The state proclamation underscores the significance of our work and reflects our ongoing dedication to the people of New Mexico as well as to the students faculty staff at UNM.”
