The University of New Mexico (UNM) is observing Native American Heritage Month with a series of events and resources aimed at education, experience, creation, and advocacy. The UNM Department of Anthropology has curated a comprehensive list of resources available on its website for this purpose.
The initiative is supported by various departments and institutes within the university, including American Indian Student Services (AISS), Native American Studies, the UNM Health Sciences Center for Native American Health, the Institute of American Indian Research, the Institute for American Indian Education, and the Native American Budget and Policy Institute. These entities are part of UNM's ongoing efforts to promote Indigenous history and livelihood.
National American Indian Heritage Month was established in November 1990 by then-President George H. W. Bush. This year’s theme from the Bureau of Indian Affairs is "Weaving Together: Our past, present and future."
Students at UNM have access to numerous resources such as the American Indian Student Services, the Department of Native American Studies, and the Health Sciences Center for Native American Health.
For additional information regarding resources related to the Native American community at UNM, individuals are encouraged to visit the Anthropology department's website. Further details can also be found on websites managed by the National Parks Service and Smithsonian Institution.
