A significant contribution from Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) is aiding nursing students at The University of New Mexico College of Nursing. A $1.6 million donation aims to provide scholarships and establish an endowment to tackle the shortage of healthcare professionals in the state.

The majority of this donation supports students pursuing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees, focusing on areas such as nurse-midwifery, pediatric nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, and psychiatric mental health. Ten students will share $1 million, making their education more affordable and encouraging them to remain in New Mexico post-graduation.

Nancy Smith-Leslie, Vice President of BCBSNM’s Medicaid program, stated: "We’re proud to partner with UNM to help reduce financial barriers for students interested in pursuing health care careers in our state. Bolstering the growth of the health care workforce, particularly in underserved and rural communities in our state is a top priority for Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico. We are committed to improving access and health outcomes for all New Mexicans."

Anna Diaz, a scholarship recipient from Santa Fe, shared her journey. Despite facing challenges growing up on the south side of Santa Fe, she graduated as valedictorian from Capital High School. Her interest in healthcare was sparked by her experiences during her father's cancer treatment.

“The hospital felt like a second home to me,” Diaz said. “I grew up talking to nurses and doctors and that allowed me to be a curious child and ask them questions.”

Now a bilingual nurse at Presbyterian Hospital, Diaz values connecting with Spanish-speaking patients: “Being able to connect with my Spanish-speaking patients and break down language barriers has been so rewarding,” she shared.

Diaz balances roles as a mother, caregiver, and student while pursuing a DNP degree focused on Family Nurse Practitioner at UNM’s College of Nursing. She aims to address diabetes issues within the state: “Diabetes education is a huge priority for me,” she said.

Her doctoral project will focus on Hispanic populations facing healthcare disparities in rural New Mexico. Diaz's Salvadoran heritage enhances her ability to connect with patients personally: “I embrace my culture and share it with my patients,” she said.

The UNM College of Nursing DNP program prepares students for holistic healthcare delivery in rural areas. Graduates can conduct comprehensive assessments, collaborate with patients on health management, lead projects improving outcomes, and practice independently due to full prescriptive authority.

Reflecting on her academic journey supported by the scholarship, Diaz expressed gratitude: “I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received,” she says. “This scholarship has opened doors for my personal and professional growth.”
