The University of New Mexico's Global & National Security Policy Institute (GNSPI) has received a significant grant from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence. This funding will designate the university as an Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (IC CAE).

Established in 2005, the IC CAE Program aims to develop skilled intelligence professionals to support America's national security goals by fostering a competitive and diverse workforce. The program focuses on minority-serving institutions to prepare students for careers in intelligence and national security.

UNM's award amounts to $2.5 million over nine years. The funds will enhance curriculum updates and introduce new courses within the Global & National Security concentration of the Liberal Arts and Integrative Studies major, as well as in the National Security and Strategic Analysis undergraduate certificate, and the Professional Master of Science in Global & National Security. Additionally, new courses in cybersecurity will be offered.

The grant also facilitates recruiting students from various fields—such as STEM, foreign languages, social sciences, and humanities—to become IC CAE Scholars. These scholars can access fully funded opportunities like study abroad programs, educational visits to federal agencies in Washington D.C., conference attendance, and stipends for summer research projects related to STEM, area studies, and national security.

Moreover, professional development programming at UNM will benefit from this grant through initiatives such as an annual Global & National Security Symposium, guest speaker events, career development workshops, and a career fair focused on global and national security.

Support from co-principal investigators across University College, UNM Political Science Department, International Studies Institute, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, along with Valencia and Los Alamos branch campuses contributed to securing this grant.

Further details on becoming an IC CAE Scholar are available through UNM’s Global & National Security Policy Institute.
