For families across New Mexico, medical emergencies often require immediate travel to hospitals in metro areas like The University of New Mexico Hospital. This was the case for the Morales family when their two-year-old son, Harlan, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) after initial tests in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
The family faced a three-hour drive to Albuquerque for Harlan's treatment at UNM Children’s Hospital. With multiple treatment cycles ahead, they needed a place to stay during these challenging times. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) stepped in to provide support.
Joseph Morales recounted their experience: “We had really nowhere to go, and the social workers here had mentioned Ronald McDonald House.” The charity provided accommodation and basic necessities at no cost. Jessica Wright, CEO of RMHC of New Mexico, emphasized the importance of this support: "If you have a sick child, you have a sick family."
The Morales family received further challenges when wildfires threatened their home area. Despite these hardships, they found solace knowing that RMHC and UNM Children’s Hospital were there for them. Valerie Morales expressed gratitude for the support: “RMCHC better than a hotel... They make food every night and take care of you.”
Miraculously, Harlan went into remission after his first treatment cycle. As his treatment concludes, the family is giving back by participating in fundraising efforts like Farm to Table(aux), where Harlan's artwork will be auctioned.
Jessica Wright noted the impact on families: “We really allowed them to give everything they had into their child that's being treated.” RMHC continues its mission with community support through donations and volunteer efforts.
