A man from Vanderwagen has admitted guilt in federal court to two counts of involuntary manslaughter following a fatal drunk driving incident on the Navajo Nation reservation in 2022.
Court documents reveal that on October 2, 2022, Sheldon Carlton Daye, aged 30 and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, drove under the influence of alcohol. He acknowledged that his actions posed a risk to others on the road. While driving along Highway 602 near Bread Springs, New Mexico, within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation reservation, Daye collided with and killed two motorists who were stopped at the roadside changing a tire.
Daye remains on conditions of release as he awaits sentencing. He could face up to 16 years in prison. After serving his sentence, Daye will be subject to up to three years of supervised release.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office.
The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with help from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark A. Probasco and Meg P. Tomlinson are prosecuting this case.
