The University of New Mexico is set to host its 2024 Research and Discovery Week from November 8 to 15. This event will include a variety of conferences, workshops, lectures, and activities open to the public. The week aims to highlight UNM's research enterprise and promote resources available to researchers.
UNM Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, “November is becoming one of my most favorite months of the year because we’ve started a new tradition here on campus with Research & Discovery Week.” She added that it is an opportunity to celebrate contributions across sciences, humanities, arts, and other fields.
The event begins on National STEM/STEAM Day, November 8. This day emphasizes the importance of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics education. Initiated in 2022 by UNM’s Office of the Vice President for Research, R&D Week seeks to enhance visibility for research activities at UNM and foster collaboration within communities.
Throughout the week there will be events for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members. Notably on Tuesday, November 12th UNM will celebrate its three newest Grand Challenges. The schedule includes keynotes from Herman Pontzer on metabolic evolution in humans and Dr. Kelly J. Cross discussing racialized trauma in engineering.
Additional highlights include a public tour at the UNM Art Museum on STEAM Day and various symposiums such as CASAA Research Day focusing on alcohol and substance use research. For more details or a full schedule of events during Research and Discovery Week visit their website.
