A Mescalero man has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for a stabbing assault on the Mescalero Apache reservation. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced that Lestat Cree Valdez, aged 21 and an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache tribe, attacked Jane Doe on May 18, 2023. According to court documents, Valdez straddled Doe and stabbed her multiple times in the head, face, and chest with intent to cause bodily harm. The victim sustained serious injuries from the attack.
Following his prison term, Valdez will undergo three years of supervised release as there is no parole in the federal system.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office.
The case was investigated by the Las Cruces Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau Investigation with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant United States Attorney Joni Autrey Stahl is prosecuting this case.
