A Fruitland woman has admitted guilt in a federal court to two counts of felony assault after attacking another woman with a pocketknife. The incident, which occurred on February 21, 2024, involved Richelle R. Upshaw, aged 24 and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, who assaulted Jane Doe. The attack resulted in serious injuries to Doe's head and face.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced the guilty plea. At sentencing, Upshaw could face up to 20 years in prison followed by up to three years of supervised release upon her release from incarceration. Additionally, she is required to provide criminal restitution to her victim.
The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with support from the Navajo Nation Department of Investigation and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Zachary C. Jones is leading the prosecution.
