The Albuquerque Police Department has increased the number of cadet classes offered each year to expedite the deployment of new officers. The department now holds four academies annually, comprising two CNM academies and two APD academies, doubling the previous total of two per year. This expansion aims to accelerate officer training and provide more opportunities for potential candidates.

Currently, APD has 908 sworn officers, including graduates from the 130th Academy Class in October. The ongoing CNM Academy, which started in July, includes 16 cadets. Additionally, APD now has 78 Police Service Aides (PSAs), with 12 graduating recently.

The upcoming 131st Academy Class is set to begin on October 7 with 25 projected cadets. The CNM 13 Academy Class is expected to start on December 30 with an anticipated enrollment of 30 cadets.

“We are seeing the success of our recruiting efforts as we have a large pool of cadet candidates, so we wanted to see what could be done to best help our officers in the field,” said Chief Medina. “With this new model, and more frequent academy classes, we are able to bolster the force in a timelier manner.”

APD also offers a pre-hire program allowing individuals awaiting cadet class commencement to take on temporary roles within the department, preventing potential candidates from seeking alternative employment.

Additionally, APD's Law Enforcement Aide Program (L.E.A.P.) facilitates hiring within a week of application submission. This program provides applicants with temporary employment while they undergo background checks and participate in fitness regimens designed to prepare them for the physical cadet entry assessment during regular work hours.

The position pays $19.75 per hour; upon completing the background check process, applicants transition into Cadet or PSA training.
