Doctors at The University of New Mexico Health System shared their personal stories and experiences in honor of Doctors’ Day, shedding light on the dedication and passion they bring to their work.

Dr. Miranda Aragon, an assistant professor and associate residency program director in Family Medicine at UNM Hospital, emphasized the importance of serving patients in all stages of life. She shared, “I get to take care of newborn babies, and I get to take care of people who are dying, who are much older and have lived really beautiful lives, and are near the end of their life.”

Dr. Christopher Bouchard, a family medicine physician at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, expressed his love for serving the community, saying, “I feel like I'm actually serving the community that I'm in and really making a true difference for people.” He highlighted the introduction of new services like prenatal care and procedures for pediatric patients to meet the community's needs.

Dr. Ramses Saavedra, a general and bariatric surgeon at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, shared his journey to becoming a surgeon, emphasizing the gratification of helping patients live better lives. He mentioned the importance of trust and teamwork in providing quality care to patients.

Dr. Andrea Sandoval, the medical director for UNM Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Services, reflected on the role of a doctor as a role model and emphasized the significance of guiding patients through their medical journey with compassion and understanding.

Dr. Mathew Ley, a hospitalist at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, expressed his satisfaction in solving diagnostic mysteries for his patients, highlighting the collaborative and supportive culture at SRMC.

Dr. Kristina Sowar, an associate professor in Psychiatry at UNM Hospital, shared her journey to finding her passion in mental health, stating, “Supporting their path has been really meaningful.” She emphasized the importance of inspiring others to pursue a career in medicine and making a positive impact on people's lives.

Each doctor's unique background and dedication to their patients reflect the diverse stories and experiences that shape the healthcare community at The University of New Mexico Health System.
