It’s officially National Black History Month!4
Although the U.S. has designated February as #blackhistorymonth since 1976, its origin can be traced even further back to 1915 when an organization called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was formed by Mr. Carter G. Woodson. However, the relevance of February goes back to 1926 when Mr. Woodson first established “Negro History Week” during the second week of February to recognize the birth dates of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.Between 1926 and 1976, mayors nationwide issued annual proclamations to celebrate Negro History Week, and by the 1960s, the week had transformed into a whole month of celebrations. President Gerald Ford signified it as a national observance in 1976.So in honor of this special month, we’d like to show our support for the black community by sharing this comprehensive list of New Mexico’s local black-owned businesses >>> http://ow.ly/lCrJ50HJCES. We have many incredible African American business owners throughout our state - especially in Bernalillo County! While support for the black community isn’t exclusive to February, this month is incredibly beneficial for the black community to be heard.More information about Black History Month can be found here: http://ow.ly/Ttu750HJCEV.
