County and State Leaders Take Tour of Amazon ABQ-1

Bernalillo County – Bernalillo County leaders, including several commissioners, along with state legislative leaders representing districts in Albuquerque, toured the Amazon fulfillment center located in the Atrisco Vista corridor on the county’s West Side.

The Bernalillo County Economic Development Department, in tandem with Commissioner Debbie O’Malley, was instrumental in the attraction of Amazon to the county and more specifically, the Atrisco Vista corridor.  The County Commission approved $6.5 million that was used for upgrades to roads, lighting and other infrastructure in the Atrisco Vista area to facilitate the new construction and attract future business expansion in the area.

“This has all been about investing in Bernalillo County, its workers, residents and it’s future,” says District 1 Commissioner Debbie O’Malley.  “Since taking office, I have been aware of the transportation and zoning challenges to attracting large employers to this corridor and have focused on getting the funding for improvements and for completion of the Atrisco Vista corridor.  Since this roadway has been a legislative priority of mine, $500,000 in state money was approved thanks to the efforts of New Mexico Representative Joy Garratt and Sen. Harold Pope.”

The Amazon fulfillment center was completed and opened in 2021 and employs roughly 1000 people.  Since opening Amazon reports an employee retention rate of about 70%.  The fulfillment center is roughly 2.4 million square feet in size.

In addition, Amazon has a distribution center in the county and is in process of building an air hub at the Albuquerque Sunport.
