The University of New Mexico (UNM) is working on the Safe Mobility Action Plan to enhance safety for various forms of active transportation on campus. The plan focuses on improving conditions for bikes, scooters, skateboards, pedestrians, and other micromobility options. Recently, a Mobility Day of Action was organized at three locations across Central and North campus: Redondo Drive & Yale Blvd., Cornell Mall, and near Fitz Hall.

UNM Campus Capital & Space Planning (CCSP), along with student volunteers and consultants from Pland Collaborative, engaged with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to gather feedback on safe mobility concerns. This input is guiding the priorities of the Safe Mobility Action Plan. At two outreach sites, a pop-up mobility lane was set up to provide users with an opportunity to experience a dedicated lane designed to avoid pedestrian conflicts. Based on this feedback from the UNM community, CCSP staff and consultants are drafting the final version of the Safe Mobility Action Plan, expected by the end of April.

UNM CCSP is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible campus environment through strategic use and development of UNM’s capital resources. Initiatives like the Safe Mobility Action Plan aim to improve student life, sustainability, and campus infrastructure while ensuring safety for all community members.

Pland Collaborative has been involved in this initiative as part of their mission to engage users in shaping their environments. Founded in 1973 as New Mexico's largest landscape architecture and planning firm with offices in Albuquerque and Lubbock, Pland believes that people are central to their work. They aim to create spaces where collective identities can be expressed through a collaborative process.
