The University of New Mexico (UNM) is undertaking an initiative to advance its digital infrastructure through an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Modernization and Strategic Readiness Assessment. This effort involves a project team that includes executive leadership and stakeholders from diverse areas across the institution, such as Student Services, Finance, Human Resources, Research, and IT.
The assessment aims to optimize UNM's administrative systems to align with the institution's evolving needs, including the UNM 2040 goals and the expanding healthcare workforce initiative. Notably, Gartner has been selected to conduct this evaluation.
The ERP Readiness Assessment will examine the current ERP system used by UNM, identify potential improvements, and evaluate the system's ability to support the university community in the future. The focus will be on streamlining processes, enhancing data management, and improving user experiences across various functions, including:
- Student Services
- Finance, Accounting, and Receivables
- Human Resources
- Inventory, Supply Chain, and Asset Management
This assessment encompasses all of UNM, including the Office of the President, Academic Affairs, Branch campuses, Finance and Administration, and the entire Health Sciences Center, which features the UNM Hospital and Medical Group clinical operations.
The assessment will provide insights for developing a strategic roadmap, ensuring that the ERP system aligns with UNM's goals and technology investments. In 2022, UNM conducted an RFI (Request for Information) to study the existing ERP vendor landscape, leading to contracting with JJH Consulting in 2023 for further evaluation.
While UNM has not decided to move to a fully cloud-based ERP, the assessment will help identify which systems should transition to cloud solutions, aiming to ensure financial and operational benefits.
The project team will soon engage in collecting input through interviews, workshops, and surveys from key stakeholders, including functional and technical staff across the institution. This feedback will aid in enhancing the experience for students, faculty, and staff, and in ensuring a smooth transition to upgraded systems.
