The Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) has named Dr. Clint Brayfield as one of the two recipients of the fifth annual Kugel & Zuroweste Health Justice Award. This award honors early-career clinicians who are making significant contributions at the intersections of vulnerability, migration, and health.

Kim Nolte, CEO of MCN, expressed admiration for Brayfield's achievements: "Dr. Clint Brayfield has shown remarkable grit and determination, overcoming significant barriers to become one of the few Native physicians in the nation. We are proud to celebrate his budding career as a family physician through the Kugel & Zuroweste Health Justice Award."

Dr. Brayfield's association with The University of New Mexico spans several years. He completed his education in their combined BA/MD program in 2020 and finished his residency in family medicine by 2023. Currently, he is undergoing additional training as a Maternal Child Health Fellow.

As a member of the Navajo Nation and among just 0.4% of Native physicians nationwide, Dr. Brayfield offers invaluable insights into the healthcare needs of Native populations. His ability to connect with patients using familiar language fosters trust and understanding. His work includes providing care for vulnerable pregnant individuals and those dealing with Opioid Use Disorder, from a place rooted in compassion and cultural awareness.

“[Dr. Brayfield] is hoping to impact the disparities that exist in maternity care for Native American people,” said Dr. Francheska S. Gurule, who nominated him for this honor. “I have no doubts he will go on to make a significant impact.”

Candace Kugel noted Dr. Brayfield’s unique status within this year’s awards: “Dr. Clint Brayfield represents some firsts for this award so far: first physician, first Native American, and first male!” She also emphasized how his focus on maternal child health aligns with her own priorities.

Brayfield was recognized during a virtual ceremony earlier this year where he received $1,000 along with widespread recognition within MCN’s network.
