The University of New Mexico (UNM) is set to host the 2025 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Conference, titled "Old and Nu," from April 3-5. This event will bring together over 500 university students, scientists, and job recruiters from across the nation to Albuquerque. It marks the first time this conference will be held in New Mexico.

Conference activities are planned at various locations including UNM’s Main Campus, ABQ Biopark, the Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel, and the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. Ethan Krammer and Alexandra Martinez, Ph.D. students in UNM's Department of Nuclear Engineering, are leading the planning efforts for this event. They emphasize that it is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for students interested in nuclear energy and policy since the conference will not return to UNM for at least six years.

“If you are a local student with any interest in going to an ANS Conference, this is your opportunity to attend one,” said Krammer.

The schedule includes a career fair, student presentations on nuclear engineering research, panels on topics such as nuclear policy and graduate school, as well as tours. “It is a wonderful opportunity, not only for nuclear engineers but for all engineering students because all of these companies and national labs will be here," Martinez stated.

Early registrants could sign up for tours of significant sites like the Trinity Site and Sandia National Labs. While most tours are full, registration for other events remains open.

This hosting opportunity comes after UNM's ANS chapter made a second bid to host the conference following an unsuccessful initial attempt. Feedback from their first bid helped refine their plans leading to their selection as hosts this year. Krammer and Martinez expressed gratitude towards former chapter members such as Rowdy Davis and Lauren Bailey who contributed significantly to their success.

Organizers are still seeking professionals willing to serve as judges for technical sessions and poster presentations. Interested individuals can contact them via email at ans25stuco@unm.edu.

Details about registration fees and the full event schedule can be found on the ANS Student Conference Website.
