The Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is calling on pet enthusiasts to volunteer as kitten and puppy caregivers. The department will offer free training classes starting in March for those interested in helping orphaned animals. Prospective volunteers are encouraged to email [email protected] to sign up or obtain more information. Following the initial contact, applicants will complete an online application process.
Mayor Tim Keller highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "This is an opportunity for the community to step in and make a positive impact on a shelter pet’s life." He added that volunteering and fostering provide rewarding experiences by making a tangible difference in the lives of animals and their future families.
The AWD offers various volunteer roles such as First Responders, Nursery Caregivers, and Foster Caregivers. First Responders are responsible for overnight care of neonatal and underweight orphaned kittens and puppies before returning them to the clinic. Nursery Caregivers provide intensive care at the shelter clinic until foster homes are found. Foster Caregivers take vulnerable animals into their homes temporarily.
Carolyn Ortega, Director of Animal Welfare Department, emphasized the importance of these programs: “AWD’s foster and volunteer program is an essential part of our lifesaving work.” She explained that fostering helps care for vulnerable animals until they are ready for adoption.
Participants in the caregiver program receive pet food and supplies from AWD while caring for shelter pets. Those interested in joining can apply through AWD's provided contact details.
By participating as caregivers, volunteers become part of the One Albuquerque team, contributing significantly to improving the lives of homeless pets.
