Inmate at Bernalillo County detention center dies after hospitalization

On January 31, 2025, Bernalillo County reported the death of an inmate from the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) following medical treatment. The individual, identified as Zeora Hercey, aged 54, died after being treated at UNM Hospital.

Hercey was initially observed with flu-like symptoms on January 27 and received care in the medical housing unit for about two hours. Medical staff at UNM Hospital recommended further evaluation, leading to Hercey's transfer and admission to the hospital. Unfortunately, Hercey passed away on January 29 at approximately 6:07 p.m. The next of kin have been informed.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will establish the official cause of death. An investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO is underway following standard procedures.
