ALBUQUERQUE — The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is organizing an adoption event named "Bark in the Meow Year" from January 10 to January 12 at city shelters. During this period, adoption fees for all pets will be waived.
Mayor Tim Keller remarked, "New Year's is an opportunity to create positive life changes with fresh starts and resolutions to make our lives and the world around us better." He added that it provides a chance for new beginnings, which is what these shelter pets need.
The adoptions will include spay or neuter services, a pet tag, microchip, vaccinations, and one free initial vet visit. Additionally, AWD offers one session of basic dog training for free with every adoption. Adoption counselors are available to provide insights about potential pets to help find suitable matches.
Krispy Kreme is supporting the initiative by offering one free dozen donuts to new adoptive pet parents.
Carolyn Ortega, Director of the Animal Welfare Department, said, "This is the time of year when many of us resolve to spread kindness, be more active, make new friends and make changes that will improve our lives." She emphasized that pets can assist in achieving these goals and encouraged making shelter pets a priority this month.
AWD invites everyone to support shelter pets through adoption, fostering, volunteering, donations, and advocacy.
