The University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center (HSC) has outlined its significant achievements for the year 2024. The accomplishments range from advancements in research to expansions in clinical care facilities and educational infrastructure.
UNM HSC researchers have made notable contributions to global microplastics research. They published three pivotal studies this year, including findings of microplastics in human placentas and their movement from the gut to organs like the brain. Another study found these particles in testicular tissue, raising concerns about reproductive health.
In terms of funding, "UNM Health is grateful to New Mexico’s voters who approved the continuance of a property tax that provides critical funding to patient care at UNM Hospital," as well as a General Obligation Bond that facilitates the renovation and expansion of the UNM College of Pharmacy building.
On another front, UNM researchers have developed a method for testing ski boot bindings in labs by simulating ACL injuries with cadavers. This project aims to prevent such injuries on slopes.
Construction has started on a $36 million expansion of the UNM Hospital Children’s Psychiatric Center, which will enhance services for vulnerable children and adolescents.
The New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center is promoting its hotline as a resource for substance use intervention, aiming to assist families in crisis situations.
To address healthcare needs in Roswell, NM, "The UNM Health System has opened a clinic," providing crucial HIV and sexual health services.
A new Reproductive Health Center is under construction in Las Cruces, focusing on providing high-quality reproductive care options where needed most.
UNM Hospital invested over $6 million into gene therapy for two brothers diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This highlights their commitment to patient well-being through advanced medical interventions.
A new Behavioral Health Crisis Triage Center at UNM Hospital now offers comprehensive psychiatric emergency services and mental health support across New Mexico.
Lastly, the opening of the new College of Nursing & Public Health Excellence (CON-PHE) building aims "to increase the capacity to educate and graduate more students" with significant funding sourced from general obligation bonds passed by lawmakers and voters along with additional university funds and donations.
