UNM Hospital will offer free flu vaccinations to attendees of the Lobo Men's Basketball game on December 18, 2024. The event is scheduled at The Pit, where the team will compete against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

The vaccinations will be available from 5:30 p.m., when doors open, until halftime. They are accessible to individuals aged five and older. UNM Hospital staff will administer the vaccines near the main entrance in the northeast corner of The Pit.

Recent data from Tricore, a not-for-profit clinical laboratory, indicates an increase in Influenza-A cases in New Mexico since late October. Children aged 0-12 have been most affected, while adults aged 26-45 form the largest group testing positive for the virus. Historically, flu cases in New Mexico peak around mid-December.

"Getting the flu shot helps protect both you and those around you, especially as we enter the winter and holiday season," said Maribeth Thornton, PhD, MBA, RN, NE-BC, CCM, UNM Hospital Chief Nursing Officer. "Vaccinating against the flu significantly reduces your chances of being hospitalized with the virus or becoming seriously ill."

No appointment or RSVP is required for those wishing to receive a flu vaccine at this event.

UNM Hospital also intends to provide flu shots at an upcoming Lobo Women's Basketball game. Details regarding this event will be announced in early 2025.
