Barbara Damron, a professor at The University of New Mexico College of Nursing, has been elected as the chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). This marks the first time a nurse has held this position. Damron is also among the initial representatives from UNM to serve in this role.

Established in 1953 with New Mexico as one of its founding states, WICHE has grown into a significant higher education compact in the United States. It collaborates with partners across the Western U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. Pacific territories, to address educational and workforce challenges.

The WICHE Commission consists of leaders from various sectors such as education, business, and community organizations. As chair, Damron will oversee efforts to facilitate student access to education and career opportunities. "WICHE is all about helping students succeed," said Damron. "I’m proud to be leading from a nursing perspective."

Damron's background includes roles as a nurse, healthcare executive, cancer researcher, and New Mexico’s cabinet secretary for Higher Education. She emphasizes finding solutions quickly with community welfare in mind: “It’s about finding solutions quickly and always thinking about what’s best for the community.”

Since becoming a WICHE commissioner in 2015 and serving as vice-chair previously, Damron aims to enhance exchange programs that allow students from states like New Mexico to study fields not available locally at rates comparable to in-state tuition. She noted these programs' impact: "These programs make a huge difference for students in New Mexico and the West."

Addressing healthcare worker shortages is another focus area for Damron. Her involvement includes initiatives like training UNM psychiatric residents in Guam due to behavioral health worker shortages there.

Throughout her career, Damron has advocated for more nurses in higher education leadership roles: "Nurses bring a unique perspective... We know what it takes to get students through school and help them succeed."

She expressed gratitude towards New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham for appointing her as a WICHE commissioner and Lt. Gov. Howie Morales for supporting her reappointment. Additionally, she thanked UNM for its support: “This one is really special... I’m excited to help keep it moving forward.”
