Dennis-Ray Armijo has been appointed as the new director of the Student Union Building (SUB) at The University of New Mexico, following a competitive nationwide search. He will assume his new role on July 1, succeeding Cheryl Wallace, who is retiring.

Armijo, an alumnus of UNM with a master’s degree in Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in International Studies, began his association with the SUB as a work-study student in 2008. Over the years, he has held various positions including professional operations intern, program coordinator, operations manager, and most recently, associate director.

In his role as associate director, Armijo managed daily operations and liaised with multiple internal and external stakeholders to ensure the facility met high standards for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Notably, he played a key role in installing a mural honoring the Indigenous Peoples’ Land and Territory Acknowledgement outside the building’s ballrooms.

Eric Scott, vice president for Student Affairs at UNM, praised Armijo's commitment to enhancing the student experience through inclusive programming and services. “Dennis brings important expertise regarding the many facets of the SUB to the director position, as well as a deep understanding of New Mexico’s distinct culture,” Scott said. “Dennis will be able to build upon the advancements made under Cheryl’s leadership that will enhance the vibrancy of our campus.”

Armijo expressed his excitement and gratitude for this opportunity. “Back in 2008, as a first-generation student starting my journey as a work-study, I never imagined I'd one day hold the role of director,” he said. “I am thankful for Cheryl and her mentorship which has helped me prepare for this opportunity.”

Jenna Crabb, executive director for Student Resources at UNM, also voiced her support for Armijo's continued leadership at the SUB. “Dennis will continue to bring his passion and collaborative spirit to the SUB, the students, and the staff in the director position,” she said. “Dennis has a lot of great ideas, vision, and initiatives that I look forward to seeing develop in his new role. I know he will do a great job and continue to meet the growing needs of the SUB.”

Looking ahead, Armijo plans to introduce new concepts to further improve the space within the SUB for university students. “I have some ideas and plans to continue improving the space within the SUB for the students of the university,” he said. “I look forward to the upcoming semester and tackling it with the amazing SUB staff.”
