Renowned author Tony Hillerman is recognized globally for his novels and memoirs centered around the Southwest, particularly focusing on the reservations and Indigenous people of New Mexico. A lesser-known fact about Hillerman is his role in nurturing journalistic talent at the New Mexico Daily Lobo.
Among his many accolades, Hillerman served as the Daily Lobo’s inaugural writing coach—a role that transformed countless students and shaped their careers. As a writing coach, Hillerman was dedicated to providing post-publication critiques and unwavering support to Daily Lobo students.
As the Daily Lobo celebrates 130 years of student journalism, the publication teamed up with Hillerman’s daughter, Anne, to create the Tony Hillerman Daily Lobo Writing and Resource Coach endowed fund to support this crucial role that continues to shape the lives of numerous Lobo journalists.
“Tony Hillerman's former students at the Daily Lobo still talk about what his mentoring meant to them,” said Daven Quelle, business manager for UNM Student Publications. “He, and the writing coaches who followed, transformed students' lives and careers, which in turn contributed to local, and even national journalism.”
“His insight had a profound, long-term impact for me and so many other students,” said Randy Montoya, one of Hillerman’s former students.
Quelle stated that the Daily Lobo has been a launching pad for aspiring journalists since its inception, and the need for guidance and support for its student writers hasn’t diminished over the years.
In celebration of the Daily Lobo’s rich history and with Anne Hillerman's blessing, Student Publications launched a crowdfunding campaign to establish the endowment with a goal of raising $300,000 to permanently fund a part-time writing coach position.
Those wishing to support Daily Lobo journalists can make a donation here. This page allows donations in amounts of $13, $130, $1,300, and $13,000 in honor of the 130th anniversary; however, any denomination including recurring gifts is appreciated.
Quelle mentioned that the fund will ensure future generations of journalists receive mentorship and support necessary to thrive. “This isn't just about preserving the past; it's about investing in the future,” she said. “By supporting this endowment, you're not just honoring Tony's memory; you're empowering the next wave of journalists to uphold the highest standards of integrity, excellence, and passion for storytelling.”
