The University of New Mexico (UNM) has achieved the No. 61 position on the Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2023, as published by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). This annual ranking highlights and celebrates U.S. universities that significantly contribute to innovation and invention.

“As we look at the current and future state of innovation in our nation, we need to ensure that the U.S. is remaining competitive in the international innovation ecosystem,” said Paul R. Sanberg, FNAI, president of the NAI. “Protecting intellectual property is a key component to this, and the Top 100 U.S. Universities list allows us to recognize and celebrate universities and their faculty, staff, and students who are not only innovating at high levels but taking the additional step of protecting their IP through patenting.”

Since its inception in 2013 with the Top 100 Worldwide Universities list, NAI introduced The Top 100 U.S. Universities ranking last year to provide a focused view of national innovation contributions by academic institutions. This year also saw the launch of the Top 60 Worldwide Non-profit Research Institutes and Government Agencies ranking.

The rankings utilize calendar year data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including all named assignees listed on patents granted during 2023.

UNM Rainforest Innovations serves as UNM's technology transfer and economic development organization, responsible for protecting and commercializing technologies developed at UNM through patents and copyrights. CEO & Chief Economic Development Officer Lisa Kuuttila leads this initiative with a vision to enhance New Mexico’s economic development through technology commercialization.

NAI defines a university as an institution offering undergraduate degrees for this report. The number of utility patents granted does not necessarily reflect a university's technology value or research effectiveness.

Founded in 2010, NAI is an organization comprising over 4,600 individual inventor members across more than 260 institutions worldwide. It collaborates closely with USPTO to expand access within underrepresented groups participating in innovation ecosystems.
