New Mexico Highlands University issued the following announcement on June 22.
New Mexico Highlands University is joining forces with the University of New Mexico for a program aimed at graduating Highlands students into health careers.
The Health Sciences Ambassadors Program will be implemented at the Achieving in Research, Math and Science (ARMAS) Center at Highlands and is sponsored by UNM’s Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
“The ARMAS Center is partnering with the UNM Health Sciences Center to provide training and support for Highlands freshmen and sophomores who are interested in health professions,” said Kelly Trujillo, Highlands ARMAS director. “Students who meet the qualifications and participate will receive a small stipend for their participation.”
Applications for the Ambassadors Program are due July 15. Email Trujillo at kmtrujillo@nmhu.edu to request an application. The program begins Sept. 7 at Highlands.
The Ambassadors Program offers:
- Educational activities designed to meet academic and social strengths and needs specific to each ambassador cohort.
- Exposure to UNM’s Health Career School admissions requirements, financial aid literacy, individualized development of lifelong learning, and coping and wellness strategies.
- Academic enrichment support in cultural humility, identity formation and promotion expression.
- Provide training and research projects in the clinical areas of opioid abuse, mental and behavioral health or childhood obesity.
- Mentorship component.
- Community engagement and service learning.
