A partnership of state, county, city, and private organizations broke ground on April 16 for West Mesa Ridge, a new affordable housing community in Albuquerque’s Westside. The development will provide apartments for working families and is expected to be completed by February 2028.
The initiative addresses the need for more accessible housing options in the area. The first phase will include 128 affordable apartments with a second phase planned to add another 144 units. These homes are intended for households earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income.
Chris Baca, President and CEO of YES Housing Inc., said, “Importantly, it will bring in an early childhood center that will not only serve children and families from the area, but also provide a teaching and learning center for those seeking to receive their Child Development Associate Certification.” Baca added that the development aims to address several pressing needs within one master planned community.
The project is led by Chelsea Investment Corporation with YES Housing as a key partner. It is funded through multiple sources including state, county, city contributions as well as Low Income Housing Tax Credit equity and tax-exempt bond financing. According to New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Cabinet Secretary Sarita Nair: “We are excited that YES Housing and Bernalillo County are deploying the state’s investment in affordable and attainable housing to create strong and healthy communities in the Albuquerque area.”
Bernalillo County Manager Cindy Chavez said: “This project represents an important step forward in Bernalillo County’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home.” Mayor Tim Keller added: “This groundbreaking reflects our commitment to ensuring Albuquerque remains a place where working families can afford to live and thrive.”
Meanwhile, public safety remains an ongoing concern in Bernalillo County; the District Attorney has expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors despite court orders.
Commissioner Barbara Baca said: “Expanding access to affordable housing remains one of the most important issues facing our community.” Charles Schmid of Chelsea Investment Corporation concluded: “We believe this project will be truly transformative for the West Mesa community and for the residents who will call it home.”
