The University of New Mexico is seeking proposals for presentations at its upcoming event, “The Art & Science of Data: From Numbers to Narratives!” The event is organized by the Office of Institutional Analytics and the Office of Assessment/Academic Program Review. It will take place in a hybrid format, with online sessions on October 16 and an in-person gathering with a livestream option on October 17.
Charla Orozco, director of the Office of Institutional Analytics, explained that the goal is to guide participants in using data for decision-making and supporting student success at UNM. “We invite the UNM community to contribute to this dynamic conversation by submitting a proposal that explores how data — both quantitative and qualitative — can drive meaningful change, support equity and tell compelling stories that improve outcomes for our students.”
Proposals from faculty, staff, and students are being accepted through September 1 via an online form. Topics suggested include data visualization tools like Tableau and Power BI, improving access to data, collecting both quantitative and qualitative information, and using data in decision-making processes.
Orozco expressed hope for greater student involvement this year. “We are also really hoping we’ll have a larger student population interested this year,” she said. “We encourage students to submit proposals to present work they’ve done or are planning to do this year.”
The two-day event will feature concurrent breakout sessions on the first day and three or four broader sessions on the second day. A networking opportunity will follow for those interested in collaborating on future projects involving data.
All submissions will be reviewed with notifications sent by September 15. Sessions will be recorded so students who cannot attend live due to class schedules can view them later online. Further details about registration, location, and the schedule will be released in mid-September.
