Fernando Moreu, an associate professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Mexico, will be a featured speaker at TEDxABQ on September 27.
Moreu will present his work on the Smart Management of Infrastructure Laboratory (SMILab) at UNM. The lab focuses on developing Low-cost Efficient Wireless Intelligent Sensors (LEWIS) and robots designed and built by students and researchers. According to the university, “The LEWIS technology allows anyone, from small business owners to children, to collect the data important to them.”
The LEWIS sensors are designed for accessibility; Moreu states that they are “simple enough for elementary school students to build, yet collects data robust enough for research purposes and coursework in graduate-level studies.” The technology has been deployed in various locations including the Sandia Peak Tramway, Tinker Town Museum, the Rio Grande, as well as sites in California, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico.
His presentation aims to demonstrate how curiosity about how things work can help reimagine daily life. The TEDxABQ event will take place at Electric Playhouse with doors opening at noon. The program begins at 1 p.m. and is scheduled until 6:30 p.m., featuring a total of 12 speakers. Tickets start at $145 for those interested in attending. Recorded talks will later be available on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel.
